ARCTIC
SECURITY
CORRIDOR
Strengthening Canada and Connecting North America
-
A 550 mile (900 km) all-season road, within a utilities corridor, will be built to connect to the North American road network at Yellowknife, connecting to the existing highway system from Yellowknife to Alberta.
-
The road will pass through the mineral-rich Slave Geological Province, enabling critical minerals development including copper, zinc, and lithium.
-
It will connect to the Lac de Gras region, lowering costs to resupply the Ekati Diamond Mine and potentially taking advantage of the facilities available at the Diavik Diamond Mine site.
-
The road will be built from both ends:
West Kitikmeot Resources is developing the 140 mi (230 km) Grays Bay to Jericho segment. -
The Government of the Northwest Territories is developing the Yellowknife to Lockhart Lake segment.
-
The full corridor will accelerate trade between Alberta, NWT, and Nunavut. Resources will be transported north to Arctic tidewater, south to Alberta processing facilities, while goods and hydrocarbons (e.g. LNG, CNG, and diesel) can move north to support NWT and Nunavut industry and communities.
